Rheumatoid Arthritis Drug Therapy

lThere are 3 general classes
lof rheumatoid arthritis drug commonly used
lin the rheumatoid arthritis treatment :
ldisease modifying anti rheumatics drugs
l(DMARDs), corticosteroids and non-steroidal
l anti-inflamatory agents (NSAIDs).

lNSAIDs rheumatoid arthritis drug
l
lThe rheumatoid arthritis drug agents major
leffect is to decrease acute inflammation
lthereby decreasing pain & improving
lfunction.
l
lAll of these rheumatoid arthritis drug also
lhave mild to average analgesic properties
lindependent of their anti-inflamatory
leffect.
l
lIt is important to notice however that these
lrheumatoid arthritis drug alone do not
lchange the course of disease of
lrheumatoid arthritis or avoid joint
ldestruction.

lCorticosteroids rheumatoid arthritis drug
l
lCorticosteroids (such as Medrol,
lprednisone; methylprenisolone ) have both
lanti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory
lactivity.
l
lThey can be given intravenously, orally,
lintramuscularly or injected directly
linto the joint
l
lDMARDS
l
lAlthough both rheumatoid arthritis drug
lagents, NSAIDs and DMARD, improve
lactive rheumatoid arthritis symptom,
lonly DMARD agent have been proven to
lalter the disease course & improve
lradiographic outcomes.
l
lDMARDs have effect upon rheumatoid
larthritis that is different & may be more
ldelayed in onset than NSAIDs or
lcorticosteroids.
