Osteoarthritis And Arthritis Treatments : Non-pharmacological

A
rthritis

The joint problems such as arthritis are not reserved for the elderly, because this type of disease attacks people of all ages.

When you feel the pain painful hips, knees, fingers, elbows and wrists to prevent you go about your daily occupations, you are likely to suffer from arthritis.

There are two major groups of articular problems : systemic arthritis, an inflammatory disease and osteo-arthritis, osteoarthritis, a deterioration of cartilage.

When a person suffers from arthritis, is its immune system that s'emballe. This causes inflammation of the membrane that covers the cartilage of the joint because of the excessive production of a substance called cytosine.

That is when the person feels pain in the articulation and sometimes stiffness. At an advanced stage of the disease there may be a distortion of the joint.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, it is also a problem painful joints, which is mainly linked to aging, sometimes difficult to avoid. At rest, people who are suffering find that the pain calms down, then it intensifies when they form a movement.

The pain is sometimes so intense they can barely or not at all to use this joint.

When osteoarthritis affects the knee, then the person is experiencing great difficulty in walking. It's the same thing when the hip is attacked. It also happens to be a part of the spine that suffers.

When someone makes osteoarthritis, the cartilage of the joint which disintegrates, becomes thinner and crack over time. This then causes friction and a real blockage that cause inflammation and often causing intense pain.

The Chiropractic Treatment

Whether for arthritis or osteoarthritis, the chiropractor is able to relieve your suffering and so you avoid taking anti-inflammatory, a type of drug that causes, according to pharmaceutical companies that produce them, more than 400 deaths a year.

When you go to the chiropractor, from your first visit, he took an X-ray of your painful joints to diagnose with certainty that you have many osteoarthritis. Thereafter, it establishes a personalized treatment plan. The same is true for those who suffer from arthritis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis : Yes To Alcohol, Not Smoking

T
wo Scandinavian studies reach the same conclusion: moderate consumption of alcohol may reduce the risk of suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and smoking would have the opposite effect.

Some Swedish researchers analyzed data from two clinical trials conducted in Sweden and Denmark. A total of 1 648 people with rheumatoid arthritis and 1 404 subjects who did not suffer responded to a questionnaire about their lifestyle and provided a blood sample.

According to the results, subjects who consumed the equivalent of five glasses of wine or more per week ran from 40% to 50% less likely to be suffering from rheumatoid arthritis compared to the subjects who drank less alcohol.

This protective effect was more pronounced among smokers, smoking is a risk factor for the rheumatoid arthritis disease. Indeed, a link between smoking and rheumatoid arthritis, among those who consumed little or no alcohol, was observed in both studies.

Quitting smoking is the best way to reduce the rheumatoid arthritis risk of suffering from this rheumatoid arthritis disease, say the authors of the study.

If they believe that moderate drinkers should not reduce their consumption of alcohol, the researchers remind that excessive consumption has adverse effects on health.

Rheumatoid arthritis can appear at any age, but the first symptoms usually occur between 40 and 60 years of age.

Wish By Early Arthritis Examination

A
latest method of joints scanning which might announce early alarm arthritis signs is being formulated by US research workers.

The MRI scan searches for low levels the glycosaminogycan chemical, which assists cartilage joints hold the aqua that causes it tough & elastic.

The New York University research workers stated early examination could decrease the demand for arthritis surgery more previous in lifetime.

Arthritis Research Campaign stated the scan could aid assess medications.
"Our techniques possess the future for leaving early warning sign for cartilage disorder suchlike osteoarthritis, for this reason potentially avoiding surgery & physical therapy more previous"Dr Alexej Jerschow from New York University

Cartilage weakening & breakdown, which softens the joints moving parts, is a lead aspect in the osteoarthritis development, which is usual in the over 40 years old.

Cartilage is tough & elastic since of its extreme water content, & existing MRI scans observe for lower levels water content as a mark that disease is originating.

The team is determining to spot condition even in the beginning by searching for a substance named glycosaminogycan (GAG), which contributes the cartilage keep lots of water.

Scientists discovered a method to build the hydrogen atoms bound to GAG give off a signal that can be took by the scanner.

Exercise Recommended For Fight Against Arthritis

T
he exercise will not only maintain its heart and its silhouette from age but it would ensure prevention against arthritis among women, according to a new Australian study.

More elderly woman because of the arthritis exercise, the more its chances of avoiding arthritis pain are large, arthritis is one of the most prevalent diseases in western countries.

An hour and a quarter of arthritis exercise per week is enough to make a difference on the next three years, according to the study published in the journal Research and Therapy of arthritis.

"I do not think these results mean that we must become a madman exercise," said its chief author Kristiann Heesch from the University of Queensland, Australia. "What it suggests is that we can derive great benefit to walking and taking a moderate activity daily."

Doctors have always encouraged arthritis exercise among older subjects to maintain the flexibility of joints, muscles and avoid gaining weight, risk factors for arthritis.

The Australian study looked at the case of fifty women and the elderly who did not know a problem stiff or sore joints. It focused on the pain and arthritis symptoms of over 8700 Australian, over three years.

The septuagénaires who were 75 minutes of arthritis exercise per week showed fewer arthritis symptoms than those who practiced less physical activity. Women alerts that are active at least two and a half hours per week have suffered much less during the next three years.

Although the direct correlation between arthritis exercise and lower joint pain seems real, the reasons for this link are not yet clear. "Maybe that physical activity acts positively on the joints.

Maybe that arthritis exercise reduces the sensitivity of sensory sensors in the subject that feels less pain, "advance Dr. John Hardin, scientific officer of the Arthritis Foundation, which has not participated in this study .

Conversely, the exercise has produced no effect on symptoms of arthritis in fifty years without Kristiann Heesch could clarify the difference between the two age groups. The findings also contradict previous studies that had shown no direct link between sport and arthritis.

New Treatment Of Rheumatoid Arthritis With Anti-Inflammatory Exosomes

A
group of orthopedic surgeons Dusseldorf (Germany) has discovered a new class of compounds biological for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. These compounds are called "anti-inflammatory exosomes".

The treatment of 66 patients with rheumatoid arthritis proved effective using this technology. Exosomes are particles cellular leukocytes that play an important role in regulation of the immune system.

For Peter Wehling, PhD Medicine Centre in Düsseldorf molecular orthopedics, Germany: "Exosomes Reclaim the immune system recognize endogenous cells as cells endogenous. "

In total, Wehling has dealt with exosomes patients age 66 various affected by acute rheumatoid arthritis. The status of any of these patients had been significantly improved with a medical or surgical treatment treaty. Patients received a single injection of exosomes in articulating the most painful.

"We have seen a rapid improvement and important in two-thirds of patients, "says Dr. Wehling, who monitored the patients during follow-up periods
can be extended over five years. These improvements have lasted on average three to six months before the treatment will have to exosomes be repeated.

"In light of these positive clinical results, treatment of arthritis with exosomes appears feasible, safe and effective in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, particularly those who do not respond well to treatment basic conventional, "explains Dr. Wehling.

In addition, exosomes can also be an option in the treatment of other immune disorders such as multiple sclerosis and allergies.

Experiments on mice with arthritis have already demonstrated the high degree of safety and efficiency particulate endogenous in the treatment of arthritis. Some studies have long been provided by the group of Düsseldorf to better understand the role played by exosomes in health and immune diseases

And they draw from their bank holiday to recover at home in order to be able to continue working.

Based on these initial results, and in parallel to the activities of Arthritis Month (September), the Arthritis Society launches arthritis in the workplace, a new program designed to help people with arthritis and their employers to better manage this disease.

Thirty percent of participants in the study say duty plan their day with great care to manage their arthritis at work.

This includes : reorganize work, waive the breaks to complete certain tasks, rested for lunch and not to participate in social activities.

Almost one quarter of them say they are unable to take on new projects or new responsibilities at work because of their arthritis, which jeopardizes their career aspirations.

More than four million Canadians suffer from arthritis, a figure expected to double by 2030. Most are between 20 and 64 years, not only are they working age, but their career is booming.

The clerical workers in the factories, passing through the outdoor workers and retail clerks, Canadians suffering from arthritis will feel at work, regardless of the nature of their employment. In fact, arthritis is the leading cause of long-term disability in Canada.

Arthritis in the workplace is aimed at employees and employers in search of simple measures to improve their management of arthritis at work.

To Treat Canine Arthritis, A Possible Solution

A
ccording to recent estimates, up to 20% of adult dogs suffer from arthritis. The researchers were able to identify the gene for canine arthritis and can now offer a treatment which contains a new formula based on nutrigenomics.

Champ knowledge relatively young, nutrigenomics can treat, by diet, the conditions - such as arthritis - for which there are genetic predispositions. It arrives in establishing a link between nutrition and DNA.

The decoding of the genome of the dog has important implications for the health of both humans and dogs, since the two genomes are very similar.

Treatments healers applied to one of the genomes can be transferred and used to develop treatments that will agree to another.

Using this technology, we created a new food for dogs available on prescription and contains natural fish oils. The food on prescription Canine j / d Hill helps relieve dogs whose joints lose their mobility.

Professor John Innes, the Small Animal Hospital of the University of Liverpool, explains how, through nutrigenomics, doctors and veterinarians can treat human and animal diseases by diet.

"A nutrient inhibits an enzyme Key abyss that the surface of the joint. If we can influence this process we can restore mobility and health of the joint.

And this enzyme, the EPA is, according to Professor Innes, primarily in fish oils, fats, such as mackerel and sardines. The food on prescription Canine j / d Hill contains high levels of EPA.

Professor Innes is available for a briefing on nutrigenomics. He explains how doctors and veterinarians can use this science to treat, by diet, human and animal diseases.

It was suggested that in the future, we will perhaps all consume, in the form of pellets, food for dogs that will contain all the nutrients we be able to avoid or modify disease which, by our genetic predispositions, we are exposed.

Arthritis Drug : The United Kingdom Suspended Prexige

T

The British authorities have suspended the drug from Novartis against arthritis, Prexige, because of concerns about possible liver damage, according to a release of the British agency regulating medicines and health products (MHRA) published Monday.

The MHRA suspend the license of Prexige because of concerns about possible liver damage patients' treatment of Prexige, according to the release.

"The latest figures indicate an increase in the number of cases of serious liver reaction with the seizure of the permitted dose of 100 mg," the MHRA said, adding that "in some cases these reactions have been associated with a short-term "Less than a month.

Novartis, contacted by AFP, said "working on a response", without giving further details.

The U.S. Agency for Drugs (FDA) had issued in late September a "not approvable letter" for Prexige, retired in August of the Australian market after the deaths of two patients.

It was the second attempt to allow the drug to the USA for which Novartis expects a "blockbuster" (1 billion dollars in sales).

Novartis withdrew its first application in 2006, after the withdrawal of Vioxx, a drug of U.S. pharmaceutical group Merck belonging to the same class (coxibe) that Prexige.

The Australian authorities have banned in August the marketing of Prexige, after the death of two people in the country.

The Prexige is prescribed to relieve pain associated with osteoarthritis, pain post-surgery, dental and related to menstrual pain. He generated the first half of 2007 a turnover of 52 million dollars (38 million euros). (source AFP)

The Mast : Key Cells In Inflammatory Arthritis Development

A
series of experiments conducted on mice highlights the central role of mast cells in the mechanism of inflammatory arthritis.

These immune cells respond to various signals inflammatory and would have an active role in the pathophysiology of inflammatory arthritis.

This discovery is being published in the edition of the journal Science dated September six. David Lee and colleagues of the Medical School of Harvard recall that the precise mechanisms of inflammatory arthritis (RA) are still poorly understood.

Previous studies have highlighted the role of many factors soluble and cellular differentiation (auto-antibodies, complement components, Fc receptors), but the sequence of steps that lead to disease remains subject to bail.

According to Lee, et al. Mast, which are located in the connective tissue and are associated with a large number of allergies, could be involved in the onset of arthritis.

The researchers studied mice without mast and they showed they were resistant to the development of a joint inflammation. Unlike normal mice, rodents lacking mast have not developed arthritis after injecting a serum containing inflammatory signals.

By cons, sensitivity to this serum was restored when the mice received a transplant of mast cells, the researchers stressed. "Thus, the mast could function as a link between the cellular self-antibodies, soluble mediators and other populations of effectors in the inflammatory polyarthritis," they write.

Diet To Relieve Arthritis Symptoms

F
rançoise Boisjoli suffers from arthritis and would like to know if there are foods to avoid and others to give priority to alleviate the symptoms.

According to Canadian statistics, more than one Canadian in seven suffers from arthritis diseases (osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis). Women are twice as likely to suffer than men.

At the biochemical level, we recognize this autoimmune disease by the accumulation of compounds eicosanoids at the joints (wrists, fingers, hip, etc.)..
The eicosanoids form a family of compounds associated with the functioning of the immune system, they include prostaglandin, thromboxane and leukotrienes.

When infectious agents (bacteria, viruses) invade our organization, it responds by secreting of eicosanoids that will set in motion a series of reactions, such as inflammation, fever, redness, swelling, and so on.

Unfortunately, when our cartilage, and our bones are chronically exposed to these compounds, it leads to their progressive destruction.

By consulting a file of the nutritionist Helena Baribeau, we learn that it would be possible to alleviate the symptoms of the disease (swelling, stiffness, pain and redness articular) in some people with arthritis by changing their diet.

First, a diet without any product of animal origin (meat, dairy products, poultry, etc.). Or without meat could only reduce the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Positive effects of fasting were also reported. Some studies have even reported benefits when fasting is followed by a vegetarian diet.

By reducing the consumption of fatty acid omega-6 (soybean oil, sunflower, grape seed, safflower, corn), we could see a similar beneficial effect. This type of fat should be replaced by omega-3 fatty.

Because several studies have shown that a daily intake of about 3 grams of omega-3 long-chain helped reduce some symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. We can achieve this by consuming a daily dose about 150 grams of fish (salmon, lake trout, herring, mackerel) or taking a supplement of fish oil.

The weight loss, even modest, in the case of excess weight can help reduce symptoms of arthritis.

Arthritis, Weight Loss, Health Hair And Constipation Vs Antidepressants

M
s. Charron, rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease resulting from the gradual destruction of joints. It leads to pain, deformed joints and mobility problems.

Some lung diseases, neurological and cardiovascular can come join.

Arthritis is not a problem of food-borne. By cons, it has just cause nutritional problems as a result of a decrease of autonomy or the consumption of drugs.

A decrease in muscle mass, loss of bone calcium, weight loss, anemia and vitamin C, vitamin A, B complex and zinc may occur. A blood taken will confirm or refute some of these problems.

Unfortunately, there is no nutritional treatment "official" that could relieve the pain and put aside medication. By cons, many avenues of research are discussed including that of an allergic reaction to red meat, dairy products, alcohol, food additives, pesticides, etc., Causing an inflammation of the joints.

Also, as you mention, many studies show that supplementation omega-3 can come to assist treatment. These fatty acids are found particularly in fish.

As for food to avoid, it seems that citrins fruit, chocolate, alcohol, red meat, refined products and spices can aggravate symptoms in some people.

Apart from this curative aspect, what is important now is to counteract the side effects of drugs on nutritional status.

Taking as an example glucocorticoids , food should be enriched in protein, calcium, potassium and dietary fibre by changing the diet and / or through a supplementation, hence the importance of consulting a dietitian / nutritionist.

Ask your doctor what are the side effects of drugs taken and the impact on nutritional status. If you can not respond adequately consult a nutritionist / dietitian. He or she will prepare food according to taking drugs.

Rheumatoid Arthritis, A Transgenic Model

A
French team has developed a transgenic mouse model of rheumatoid arthritis, rheumatic disease whose development is strongly associated with the expression of certain HLA alleles.

Mice KRN which were created by S. Mangialaio and his colleagues at the Instititut of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology in Illkirch are transgenic animals where the recognition of MHC molecules of itself (haplotype Anod) by a T cell receptor (TCR) triggers a specific autoimmune disease joints.

Researchers state that the development of rheumatic disease is directly activated by transgenic T cells through interaction TCR-MHC.

Other combinations TCR KRN-CMH alloréactives not cause arthritis, indicating that arthritis KRN depends on a specific antigen recognized by the TCR KRN. Researchers have also shown that arthritis is not simply due to overexpression in the joints of an antigen recognized by the TCR KRN.

They also created a new model in which a transcriptional specific B cells and controlled by tetracycline, can induce the expression of genes reporters in lymphocytes B.

"This will allow us to seek the role of B cells in the induction of tolerance in the KRN arthritis and other autoimmune diseases," conclude the authors.

The good news, notes the rheumatologist Monique Camerlain is that the prospects are good. The research has helped develop medicines and treatments, and continues to grow, "she said.

Arthritis : A Disease To Demystify

M
any people think arthritis is a disease that affects only the elderly. However, this assertion is the myth, since 1500 youth in Quebec suffer from this malaise.

The Arthritis Society (division Estrie-Montérégie) wants to campaign to demystify this disease.

"For many people, be suffering from arthritis, is to be locked up. Your body becomes a prison, "said the Regional Director (Eastern Townships - Montérégie) of the Arthritis Society, Rita Lizotte-Gouin, in order to paint a bleak picture of the situation.

Within the MRC Memphremagog, Ms. Lizotte-Gouin 7000 estimated the number of people delivering a battle against arthritis.

The annual fundraising campaign, during which an event is held at Cafe Saint-Michel de Magog, March 12 next, would like to raise money to find cures for this disease and to sensitize the population.

Arthritis : A Disease To Demystify "There's not so long ago, I met a teenager of 15 years in a waiting room, which had an appointment with her rheumatologist. She told me she wanted to be shaved hair. I asked him why. She said that her classmates do not understand his illness.

They wonder why it can not climb the stairs of the school at full speed. It must take the elevator, then it's perfectly normal air. She believes that by shaving hair, it will give a face to this disease, that students will understand better.

That is why we must convey the message that arthritis does not discriminate. It addresses all people, young or old. "

he Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta (Georgia) recently unveiled the results of a study on arthritis in adults.

It focused on 212 000 people across the United States. Approximately one third of these people, suffers from one of the hundreds of possible forms of arthritis, including the two most serious are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

The salaries, hospitalizations and work days lost because of this disease cost about $ 82 billion per year.

Arthritis is more common among women than among men, among physically inactive people and those suffering from overweight.

Hence, this family of diseases is the chronic health problem most severe USA. The situation is even more alarming that research on rheumatology receives too little credit. So the National Institutes of Health spent only 278 million dollars to research on arthritis in 2001, compared to an overall budget of 20 billion dollars.
